Smart Home Wiring

I have spent a lot of time talking about the building science behind my project and very little about the smart home technology that I am packing into the house. Now that I have started running thousands (yes thousands!) of feet of wire I’ll take a break from talking about the building science to focus on the smart tech!

One of the signature features of the house is the movie theater. I made a decision early on to eliminate a TV from the main living room and have a dedicated movie theater instead. The theater sports an LED smart projector that projects on to a white 90 inch fixed-screen. A dedicated surround processor takes a digital signal from the projector and outputs 5.2 surround to a Sonance amplifier which powers five Klipsch speakers, a subwoofer, and two base shakers.

To pack all of this out-of-view behind the walls in the movie theater, I have run speaker wires, HDMI cables, network cables, fiber optic cables, and RG6 cables!

The house is also wired for audio on the main-level and outside. A few additional speaker wires feed in-wall Klipsch speakers and a couple of outdoor speakers for the patio. All of these run back to the Sonance amplifier which utilizes Google Chromecast Audio units to allow anyone to connect their devices to the speakers.

I opted to install a TV in each bedroom and run not only a standard RG6 cable to each, but a network cable too to support the Roku Smart Tv features.

To further automate the house, every switch, thermostat, and lock is Zwave compatible. A Vera Plus controller integrates all of these items and provides a nice tablet interface to easily adjust everything at the touch of a button.
